Isaiah just said “toe,” pretty clearly, a number of times, while lying on his changing table holding his toe, which he had just finished having a nice post-bath suck on. Other meaningful sounds before now have included “nana” for banana, a term that was popular some time ago but seems to have fallen out of fashion. Then there was a very emphatic “ka!” for car, pronounced as though he were telling a joke about someone who came from Boston, but replaced more recently with a much more hesitant, less Bostonish, “kah” version of its old self. There’s also the sound a car makes, a throaty “rrrr.” And there is the recently developed “uka,” also pronounced “guka,” preferably said repeatedly, with great emphasis, while pointing and wobbling down the sidewalk at top speed in pursuit of a truck. When no actual truck available, however, meaningful images will do.
