rubber necking

Isaiah's gums got a new best friend today: Sophie the rubber teething giraffe. Her biographical package insert informs us that she was born in Paris in 1961, at a time when the toys were all just farm animals, not exotic animals like giraffes. (The package insert clearly does not know how we feel about farm animals.)

Most of the baby toys we've seen so far are covered in a bewildering variety of colors and textures and shapes, with at least one part that crinkles like a plastic bag when you touch it. They feel exhaustively researched. And Isaiah is usually pretty indifferent to them: you have to show him the developmentally appropriate aspects and get him gradually interested. Sophie, on the other hand, is a rubber giraffe. She has two colors, one texture, and nothing crinkly. But Isaiah was absolutely entranced, from the first minute he got her. He gnawed on her nose and then worked his way to her rubber neck. Her legs are the perfect shape for him to grab onto and to put in his mouth. It was the most instantaneous interest he's had in any object so far.

We guess we are doomed to haunting the vintage baby toy section from now on.

  1. "It was the most instantaneous interest he's had in any object so far." Start him on solid foods, and the next day, we've forgotten about the breast?
